What to Expect at LA Travel & Adventure Show
At last year’s LA Travel & Adventure show we canoodled with Falkland Islands penguins (sort of), as you can see in the photo to the left, enjoyed chatting with our friend Peter Greenberg before his talk (don’t miss him if you go – we always learn something great from him!), and we enjoyed meeting and learning about new destinations to add to our bucket list, as well as what’s new in some of our past favorites.
The event spans two days, but if you can only attend one, research the schedule and participants and plan ahead – there’s a lot of exhibitors to see, speakers to hear, and culinary demonstrations to watch and taste!

The weekend also features a variety of great travel speakers, including tv host Rick Steves, world famous explorer, diver, and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau, Guidebook author Pauline Frommer, America’s most recognized travel journalist Peter Greenberg, tv host of “Born to Explore” Richard Wiese, author Patricia Schultz, and longtime host of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” Chris Harrison.
The 2013 Los Angeles Travel & Adventure Show will take place January 12-13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Long Beach Convention Center, 300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90802.

We were in Milan, Italy and having been warned about pickpockets we wore body purses. We were surrounded by street urchins and my husband, who is very tall and broad, shouted at them to leave us alone. One member of our group had his wallet taken. The next day we were going to Venice, so my husband cut up newspaper and stuffed an empty wallet full and stuck the wallet in his back pocket : he was extremely upset that his pocket wasn’t pinched as he so wanted these urchins to open up the wallet and just find newspaper.
we went to China… where supposedly one can flush toilet paper down the toilets… we were with a Gate1 Tour and were all Americans… well, I guess Americans are used to using a lot of toilet paper… after my bathroom trip, I needed a plunger and I walked out into the hall to go to the front desk–but in the hall, I met an embarrassed bell boy who was going room to room with a plunger, unclogging Americans’ toilets… I was very embarrassed, and I gave him a $5 tip (and I hope our fellow tourists did too…)
Hilarious. Very glad you tipped for that invaluable service, Chad!
My husband and I were waiting for our flight from Lima, Peru back home to Los Angeles, CA. Once we verified that we were at the correct gate, we relaxed with our books/magazines until it was time to board. As our boarding passes were scanned, the employees smiled and told us to enjoy our flight. A few minutes later, the same employees came running down the jetway to the plane screaming our names. Apparently our gate was switched but since all of the announcements had been made in Spanish, we didn’t realize we were boarding a flight to Quito, Ecuador leaving at the same time instead! We had to run to the correct gate while they held our plane.
Wow to end up in Ecuador instead of LA would have been an adventure for sure! 🙂
Most embarrassing? When I missed a flight because I just assumed the whole world was on U.S. time instead of military time. My flight left at 2:35 from Dubai. I showed up at 1 pm only to find out my flight had left nearly 12 hours earlier. Duh. Never again will I make that costly mistake.
Zane, we can relate to rookie flight mistakes! Just missed a flight because we misread boarding times!
I like to keep two bags packed at all times so I can quickly – at a moment’s notice – head for the mountains to ski or to a beach for some sun. This past November, I was in a hurry to get to the airport to catch my flight to Denver so I instead of grabbing the cold weather bag, I grabbed the beach bag. Imagine my surprise when I opened my bag only to find sundresses instead of snowpants! Bikini skiing and shopping, anyone?
Bikini skiing and shopping? We’re in! 😉
