For such an iconic cocktail as the Martini, its history of origin remains a mystery. Whoever invented it, we’re eternally grateful, especially on June 19th – National Martini Day. The Martini takes on many shapes and forms these days from key lime pie to kombucha. And then there’s the purists, who say the only true Martini is simply gin or vodka with dry vermouth, garnished with green olives. However you like to drink it, here’s where to find the world’s best Martinis for National Martini Day and some other fun facts about martinis.

Hot Tips on Making a Classic Martini
We hang out with a lot of bartenders throughout our travels. So here’s a few tips we’ve learned from our favorite barkeeps along the way about martini-making.
- Keep the alcohol in the fridge rather than the freezer. You want the ice to melt a bit to meld the vermouth and spirit and if the spirit is as nearly as cold as ice, this magic won’t happen.
- Always chill your martini glass before. Put it in the freezer way ahead of time or fill the glass with ice and dump out before pouring the martini in.
- Like wine glasses, the reason for the long stem on a martini glass is too avoid warming the drink with your hands.
- Opinions differ on the ideal ratio of vodka/gin to vermouth; some say 7-1, others 5-1, still others 3-1.
“I like to have a martini, two at the very most; three, I’m under the table, four, I’m under my host!” – 1920s satirist Dorothy Parker
