Fall abundance has arrived in St. Maarten with turtle nesting season kicking off! In October, 130 green turtle hatchlings made their way to the Caribbean Sea and three more nests are expected to produce baby turtles by December 2015.
This time of year is turtle nesting season in the Caribbean and four endangered female green turtles decided to build their nests and start their families off in four-star manner — at the Westin’s Dawn Beach in Philipsburg, St. Maarten.
The first of the hatchlings – 130 in total – came from the first female to arrive on Dawn Beach and have now made their way to the sea. Watch a video here.
The turtles have the right idea! The Westin Dawn Beach is known for its white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and accommodating staff, who are committed to offering a safe harbor for turtles and their offspring.
It’s unknown why the turtles chose the resort’s beach for its nesting ground, but the location is on the Dutch side of the island away from the hustle and bustle of traffic and throngs of people, and strives to be a leader in eco-friendly practices.
In fact, the Westin recently completed the largest solar installation program at a major Caribbean resort and now produces six to eight hours of its own power daily.
