6 Thomas Jefferson Historical Sites to Visit Now

Why now? Sunday, April 13 marks the third president of the United States’ birthday, so why not pay your respects by visiting one or all of these six Thomas Jefferson historical sites. One of America’s Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson is best known as the principal author of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Throughout his life, he was a leader speaking out for democracy, the rights of man, and embracing the principles of republicanism (not the same definition as “republican” today).

Thomas Jefferson Historical Sites:

1. Jefferson Memorial (Washington, DC)

Thomas Jefferson Memorial is a Roman style memorial structure modelled on the Pantheon and built to honour of one of America’s Founding Fathers.

2. Monticello (Charlottesville, VA)

Monticello was home of Thomas Jefferson as well as the place of his burial. After inheriting a large amount of land from his father, started built Monticello when he was twenty-six years old and ran it as a plantation. Today, it is a museum and has been maintained as close as possible to what it would have been like during Jefferson’s time.

3. Independence National Historical Park (Philadelphia, PA)

Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia contains a number of sites and landmarks relevant to US independence, including Independence Hall.

4. Independence Hall (Philadelphia, PA)

Independence Hall is the site where the Second Continental Congress met. As a crucial member of the group, it was Jefferson who drafted The Declaration of Independence in 1776.

5. Mount Rushmore (South Dakota)

Mount Rushmore in South Dakota is an iconic monument to four of the Presidents of the United States of America, including third president Thomas Jefferson.

6. The National Mall (Washington, DC)

The National Mall and Memorial Parks house many iconic US historical sites, including the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.
