Punkin’ chunkin’, corn ear shooting, and pumpkin donuts? Meet Spokane, Washington during the fall harvest. It’s a place where you can be a kid again – from sliding down a shoot into a “sand box” of dried peas and getting lost in a human-size hay maze to tasting wine from the barrel out of a turkey baster! Our stories below cover it all, but we have to make a special mention to the Kalispel Tribe, whose ancestral land we visited in Usk, Washington. There you can see the buffalo herd, walk the land, check out a pow-wow (if your timing is right!), and venture through the land’s vast caves and grottos.Of all the native tribes in the U.S., this one is one of the most impressive, keeping its ancient heritage alive, reviving its spirit, and most importantly, giving back to the community in spades.
The tribe is the mastermind behind Spokane’s crown jewel of a hotel: Northern Quest Resort & Casino. We enjoyed the upscale cigar bar, tested our luck at the craps tables, shared a 22-inch hot dog at the Q (the hotel’s sports bar), and indulged in a Pend Orielle River Stone Massage at their Current Spa.For wine in Spokane, these wineries and tasting rooms are not be missed:

- Arbor Crest (which has one of the best 360 degree views of the valley around)
- Barrister (which boasts “train-aged” wine from their downtown barrel room located under the train tracks)
